Bhutan

The Land of the Thunder Dragon — dzongs, prayer flags and Tiger's Nest

About Bhutan

Why travellers fall for Bhutan

Bhutan is a peaceful Himalayan kingdom of iconic dzongs, ancient monasteries and valleys that measure progress by Gross National Happiness. Thimphu holds the 52 m Buddha Dordenma and Memorial Chorten, Dochula Pass is crowned with 108 stupas, Punakha's dzong sits at a river confluence, and Paro is home to the cliff-hugging Tiger's Nest (Taktsang). Indian nationals need no visa, only an Entry Permit, and pay a Sustainable Development Fee (Nu. 1,200 per person per night; children 6–12 pay Nu. 600). The Ngultrum is pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee. Dress modestly at dzongs and temples, and remove shoes and hats before entering shrines.
