Spiti Valley

A high-altitude cold desert of ancient monasteries and starlit skies

About Spiti Valley

Why travellers fall for Spiti Valley

Spiti — 'the middle land' between India and Tibet — is a stark, spellbinding cold desert cradled at 3,000–4,500 m in the Trans-Himalaya. Whitewashed monasteries cling to ochre cliffs at Tabo, Dhankar and Key; villages like Komic, Langza and Hikkim hold world records for altitude; and rivers carve through a moonscape of canyons toward the crescent lake of Chandratal. Reachable only in summer, it rewards the long drive with some of the clearest night skies and oldest living Buddhist culture on earth.
