Spiti — 'the middle land' between India and Tibet — is a stark, spellbinding cold desert cradled at 3,000–4,500 m in the Trans-Himalaya. Whitewashed monasteries cling to ochre cliffs at Tabo, Dhankar and Key; villages like Komic, Langza and Hikkim hold world records for altitude; and rivers carve through a moonscape of canyons toward the crescent lake of Chandratal.
