7 Mistakes First-Time Safari Travellers Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Over-packing, wrong colours, unrealistic expectations — sidestep these rookie errors for a smoother first safari.

Your first safari is one of travel's great thrills — but a few common mistakes can take the shine off. Here's what the seasoned travellers know.

Wear neutral colours. Bright clothing and bold blues or blacks can disturb wildlife (and attract insects). Khaki, olive and beige are your friends.

Don't over-pack. Light-aircraft transfers have strict, low luggage limits, often around 15kg in soft bags. Laundry is usually available at camp.

Manage expectations and embrace patience. Nature runs on its own schedule. The quiet moments — a sunrise, a herd grazing — are as memorable as the kill you hoped to see.
