River crossings, calving season or big-cat action? Here's exactly when to visit the Serengeti and Masai Mara for the safari moment you're dreaming of.
The Great Migration isn't a single event — it's a year-round, 1,000-kilometre loop of nearly two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle chasing fresh grass and rain across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem. Knowing where the herds are in a given month is the difference between a good safari and the safari of your life.
January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth within a few weeks, and where there are newborns, there are predators. This is prime time for dramatic big-cat action.
From July to October, the herds push north and face the legendary Mara and Grumeti river crossings — the most cinematic moment in all of nature, as thousands plunge through crocodile-filled waters.
Our advice? Decide what matters most to you — crossings, predators or fewer crowds — and let us position your camps along the herds' path. Timing is everything, and it's exactly what we obsess over.
